Abstract

Low student participation and motivation in Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) learning poses a serious challenge to fostering an active lifestyle among adolescents. Conventional learning approaches oriented toward direct instruction are considered inadequate in meeting students' psychological needs and encouraging active engagement. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of innovative PJOK learning based on sports education in increasing student participation and motivation at SMP Negeri 13 Makassar. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 100 eighth-grade students divided into an experimental group (n = 50) and a control group (n = 50). The research instruments included an active participation scale and a motivation scale based on Self-Determination Theory. Data were analyzed using t-tests, ANCOVA, and effect size calculations (Cohen's d). The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group. Participation scores increased from 65.42 ± 6.85 to 82.76 ± 7.12 (p < 0.001; d = 1.78), while motivation increased from 68.35 ± 7.40 to 85.90 ± 6.95 (p < 0.001; d = 1.85). ANCOVA analysis showed a significant effect of the intervention on participation (partial η² = 0.45) and motivation (partial η² = 0.48). It was concluded that the sports education-based PE learning innovation was effective in significantly increasing student participation and motivation and was pedagogically meaningful. This model is recommended as a strategy for transforming PE learning at the junior high school level
