AbstractThis study examines Generation Z's reception of the depiction of loneliness in the animated film Elio (2025). The film tells the story of Elio, an 11-year-old boy who loses both parents and lives with his aunt. The lack of emotional closeness makes Elio feel alone, misunderstood, and wants to escape from Earth. Loneliness becomes a central issue that shapes the character's emotional journey. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with Stuart Hall's Reception Theory. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with Generation Z informants who had watched Elio. Analysis was conducted through an encoding and decoding process to understand the audience's interpretation of the depiction of loneliness in the film. The results show that Generation Z's interpretation of the depiction of loneliness in Elio varies. Four informants occupy a dominant-hegemonic position because they accept the film's message according to the creator's intent. Three informants occupy a negotiated position, adjusting the meaning based on personal experience. Meanwhile, two informants occupy an oppositional position because they consider the depiction of loneliness in the film to be less than realistic. This study also shows that Elio encourages the understanding that loneliness is a normal experience while reducing the perception that loneliness is synonymous with weakness or something negative. The findings confirm that the audience's interpretation is influenced by the film's content, life experiences, and social context, so that Elio becomes a medium of reflection in responding to the experience of loneliness.
