AI Policy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Jurnal Ilmiah Farmako Bahari (JIFB) recognizes the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Generative AI and other AI-assisted technologies, in research and scholarly publishing. AI may be used as a supporting tool, but it must not replace human scientific judgment, intellectual contribution, critical analysis, or ethical responsibility.

For Authors

Authors may use AI-assisted tools to support manuscript preparation, such as improving grammar, language clarity, translation, organization, literature exploration, or technical assistance. However, all AI-generated or AI-assisted content must be carefully reviewed, verified, and approved by the authors.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and scientific validity of the submitted manuscript.

AI tools must not be used to:

  • fabricate or falsify research data;
  • generate false or unverifiable references;
  • create experimental results that were not actually obtained;
  • manipulate research images or data in a misleading manner;
  • replace scientific analysis, interpretation, or scholarly judgment.

AI systems, chatbots, and Large Language Models (LLMs) cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the content of a scientific publication.

If Generative AI has made a substantive contribution to manuscript preparation, the authors must disclose its use.

A recommended statement is:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of AI tool] for [purpose]. All AI-assisted outputs were reviewed, verified, and edited by the author(s), who remain fully responsible for the final content of the manuscript.”

Routine spelling, grammar, or formatting checks that do not substantially alter the scientific content do not normally require disclosure.

AI Use in Research Methods

If AI is used as part of the research methodology, authors must describe its use in the Methods section, including the name of the tool or model, its purpose, relevant procedures, and validation methods where applicable.

The use of AI in research must comply with principles of transparency, reproducibility, research ethics, and scientific integrity.

Images and Research Data

AI must not be used to generate or manipulate images, figures, or data that are presented as authentic research results when they do not originate from the actual study.

AI-assisted visualization may be used when it is directly based on genuine research data and does not distort the scientific interpretation.

Confidentiality and Privacy

Authors must not upload confidential, sensitive, unpublished, personally identifiable, or patient-related information into AI systems unless appropriate data protection and ethical safeguards are in place.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the use of AI does not violate privacy, copyright, intellectual property rights, or research ethics requirements.

For Reviewers

Submitted manuscripts are confidential documents.

Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, figures, tables, datasets, or other confidential materials to publicly accessible AI systems that may store, reuse, or process such information.

AI must not replace the reviewer’s independent scientific judgment. Reviewers remain fully responsible for the content, quality, and recommendations of their review.

For Editors

Editors must maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and must not upload confidential manuscript content into AI systems without appropriate data protection safeguards.

AI may support limited administrative or editorial activities, but it must not replace human editorial judgment.

All editorial decisions, including manuscript acceptance or rejection, remain the responsibility of the editor.

Responsibility and Publication Ethics

The use of AI does not remove the responsibility of authors, reviewers, or editors for:

  • factual accuracy;
  • reference validity;
  • originality;
  • plagiarism;
  • copyright compliance;
  • research integrity;
  • data and image authenticity;
  • confidentiality;
  • ethical conduct.

Undisclosed, inappropriate, or misleading use of AI may result in requests for clarification or revision, manuscript rejection, correction, or retraction, depending on the severity of the violation.

Jurnal Ilmiah Farmako Bahari supports the responsible use of AI based on the principles of transparency, accountability, human oversight, confidentiality, scientific integrity, and research ethics.

This policy may be updated periodically in response to developments in AI technology and scholarly publishing standards.
